Making Books

• Seeds! Seeds! (individual book): Before making this book, write the following poem on poster board. As you read the poem out loud, point out the spaces between the words.

I dug a little hole

And planted many seeds.

The seeds grew sprouts,

So I pulled up the weeds.

The sun shined brightly

And sprouts grew tall.

Buds became blossoms

After I watered them all.

Write each line on a separate piece of paper and make enough copies so that each child has all the pages. While teaching the poem, emphasize the words in boldfaced type and make word cards with corresponding pictures from the poem. Help the children see the different letters used to make up the words. Encourage the children to illustrate their books, doing only one page a day so it will not be overwhelming. See the following list for ideas:

• Hole: Glue on potting soil.

• Seeds: Use craft glue to attach real seeds.

• Sprouts: Cut out little pieces of green paper and glue to the page.

• Weeds: Collect real weeds and glue to the page.

• Sun: Draw a sun.

• Sprouts: Draw plants.

• Blossoms: Scrunch small pieces of colored tissue paper and glue to the page.

• Water: Use Q-tips and watercolor paint.

When the children are doing their artwork, do not put your word cards at the art table because the children may try to copy your picture. This stifles their creativity. Staple all of their pages together when they finish.
